Coursework - Required

The purpose for completing the set of required courses is to address specific competency criteria and/or create products for a sub set of the program's 62 competencies during each course. All courses are on-line distance learning experiences.

The required INSYS courses within the ITSC program are:

1. INSYS 462, Coordinating Technology Use in Education (3 credits).

This course is only offered Spring Semester (begins January).

Note: The World Campus is in the process of changing the scheduling of this course. INSYS 462 will not be offered in Spring Semester 05 but will be offered in Summer Semester 05. After Summer Semester 05 it will be offered in Spring Semesters only beginning Spring 06.

Within INSYS 462, you will be prepared to create products for 21 of the 62 competencies outlined in Penn State's ITSC program.

Note 1: You do not need to complete INSYS 448 before you register for this course. Please simply request a wavier.

2. INSYS 461 - Designing Computer Networks for Education (3 credits)

https://courses.worldcampus.psu.edu/welcome/insys461/su03/

This course is only offered in the Summer Semester (begins June).

Within INSYS 461, you will create products for 9 of the 62 competencies outlined in Penn State's ITSC program, specifically 1.16, 1.17, 1.18, 1.19, 1.20, 1.21, 1.22, 1.23, and 1.24.

Note 1: You do not need to complete INSYS 448 before you register for this course. Please simply request a wavier.

Note 2: An opportunity to "test out" of INSYS 461 may be available to you however, successfully completing the "test out" process only exempts you from completing products for 1.16, 1.17, 1.18, 1.19, and 1.20. After a successful "test out" of 461, you are still required to complete products for competencies 1.21, 1.22, 1.23, and 1.24 and while registered for Independent Study (INSYS 496). You may request to "test out" of 461 by submitting a two page paper that details a strong rationale for why you believe that you already possess the skills and abilities required within competencies 1.16, 1.17, 1.18, 1.19, and 1.20. Your paper will then be reviewed by the ITSC program committee and a decision made as to whether or not a "test out" opportunity and time will, in fact, be arranged for you. In the event that a test out appointment is granted, you will be required to place a conference call to an assigned instructor and at your own expense. During this conference call, you will be interviewed by the assigned faculty member and for 30 minutes. After the 30-minute interview, the instructor will send a recommendation to the ITSC Program Director. Only one of two recommendations will be made: 1) that you be exempt from completing 461 and only competencies 1.16, 1.17, 1.18, 1.19, and 1.20; or; 2) that you complete INSYS 461 as required. And the recommendation made is final.

3. INSYS 595 - Internship (3 credits)

http://ide.ed.psu.edu/itsc/dev/area9/insys595.htm

This course is offered at any time during the year however, you must first request permission from the ITSC Program Director to register for this course. After receiving permission to register for INSYS 595, you can then register for this course and this course will end 12 weeks after the date of registration.

Within this course, you will complete competencies in Area 9 - Supervised School Experience, specifically competencies 9.01, 9.02, and 9.03. It is worth noting that you can not register for this course until after you have completed products for ALL of the other 59 competencies that are not addressed in INSYS 595, requested a review of your work, and have successfully passed your review. Therefore, INSYS 595 is the LAST course that you will schedule to complete.

Logically, exemptions from registering for INSYS 595 - Internship will be granted if you hold a current Pennsylvania Department of Education issued emergency ITS certificate at the time that the practicum is required, which is at the end of the program. However, at the time that the practicum is required, you will need to scan your current PDE emergency ITS certificate and include it in your ITSC web-based portfolio.

After completing the required courses, you only have 29 more competencies to complete.
