Coursework - Independent Study

The purpose for scheduling independent study coursework is to narrowly focus on developing products for an identified sub set of competencies that are not addressed in the required courses. Independent study coursework is an option for candidates who believe that they already possess the related content knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to complete products for a sub set of competencies not addressed in the required courses.

The independent study course within the ITSC program is:

· INSYS 496 - Independent Study (3 or 6 credits per semester)

This course is offered at any time during the year however, you must request permission from the ITSC Program Director to register for this course. After permission is granted, you can then register for this course and this course will end 12 weeks after the date of registration. Also, you can register for this course as many times as necessary in order to fulfill your continuous enrollment commitment when opting to work independently to create and/or submit products to your ITSC web-based portfolio.

The first time that you register for an Independent Study, you will be required to complete Competency Set ONE - Setting up the ITSC web-based portfolio which includes Area 1 - Media competencies 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 13 & 15, if you have not already completed this task. Also, you are required to set up your portfolio before you register for INSYS 461 and INSYS 462. However, you may elect to set up your portfolio immediately prior to beginning INSYS 462 and INSYS 461 and without necessarily registering for an Independent Study. And you will identify your plan to setup your portfolio within the admissions application.

By enrolling in INSYS 496, you are stating that you wish to work independently to create products for specific ITSC competencies rather than enroll in a structured World Campus course (INSYS 400, 446, 448, or 449). Furthermore, you elected to work independently because you are confident that you already possess the related content knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary in order to demonstrate the competencies that you identify and contract to complete within the twelve weeks while registered for INSYS 496.

While enrolled in INSYS 496, you are provided with the opportunity to independently create products, add these products in your evolving ITSC web-based portfolio, request that the ITSC Program Director review the products that you created, and receive product-related feedback. The subset of products that you identify and commit to create and complete while enrolled in an Independent Study become eligible for review and feedback at the end of the course.

The following is a list of six different sets of ITSC competencies that are not addressed in the required courses. Each competency set contains a manageable sub set of ITSC competencies that can be completed within a 12-week time period and for three credits. When electing to register for INSYS 496, you will first, be required to identify a competency set that you will commit to complete in 12 weeks before you will be permitted to register.
