Learning Resources - Supervised School Experience 9.02

9.02 Well Developed Plan. Develop an effective Supervised School Experience plan.

Introduction

You have addressed and completed all of the competencies aligned with PDE's "Knowing the Content" and "Professionalism" standards. Now you must begin working to address PDE's Performance" standards. Within the Performance standards, a full-time practicum experience that mirrors the position to which you aspire is required. However, prior to beginning the actual practicum, you must first create a personal road map to help guide the field experience. Creating a prepracticum well-developed plan is critical to the process and will become your personal roadmap. Also, your well-developed plan will be a logical extension of the strengths and weaknesses paper that you drafted for competency 9.01.

Throught the practicum process, you can look forward to working closely with both your identified in-school cooperating supervisor and Penn State's ITSC Practicum Supervisor.

Your Job:

  1. Use the details provided below to create a product that addresses and demonstrates mastery of this competency.
  2. Use the stepwise process listed under Your Portfolio to display the completed product in your ITSC portfolio.

    Product Details:

Note: You are required to be registered for INSYS 595 - Internship before you begin this competency.

    Your plan must include:

    • Exact starting and ending dates,
    • Identification of a cooperating supervisor within the district and his/her title,
    • Measurable objectives for each PDE standard,
    • Rich descriptors of the projected experience for each PDE standard,
    • A productive feedback and assessment system aligned with the objectives and the PDE standard, and
    • A description of the amount of time that you propose to spend in each standard area during the experience. (The total must equal the amount of time you will spend in the field.)

You are required to use the information provided in Related Resources to help guide this process.

Related Resources:

Every candidate's practicum experience is different and unique. Technology needs, implementation, support and services not only vary from district to district, but from month to month and probably week to week as well. Even though every practicum experience is unique, all experiences must be analyzed, designed, developed, implemented, and evaluated through PDE's Performance standards. The following resource is offered to help guide you through the development of your individual well-developed practicum plan.

  1. Review the paper that you wrote for competency 9.01 with your in-school cooperating supervisor.
  2. Interview your in-school cooperating supervisor. The purpose of the interview is to fully understand all of the experiences that you will engage in during your practicum.
  3. After you have clear details of each and every experience that you will engage in during the time of your proposed practicum, partition these experiences into the PDE performance standards. In other words, match each and every experience that you will engage in during the practicum to an appropriate PDE Performance standard.
  4. For each experience listed under each standard, create a comprehensive set of measurable objectives.
  5. Then generate a comprehensive bulleted list of descriptors for each objective.
    • The descriptors paint the “What”, “Who” and “How” for each objective aligned with the experience that you propose.
  6. Assign a realistic amount of time that will be required to complete each of the experiences listed for each standard that total the amount of time that you are to spend in the field.
  7. Construct a comprehensive assessment and feedback system for each experience that is aligned with the objectives and also the PDE standard. For each assessment that you create, identify who will complete the assessment i.e., math teacher, elementary teacher, administrator, cooperating supervisor, etc. (see competency 9.03).
    • Likert scales are often used for this purpose however, each assessment system that you develop needs to help answer the following questions: How am I doing? and How can I do better? In addition to likert scales, please include the following statements for each objective or experience: 1) One thing I really liked was... and 2) One suggestion I have is.... The assessment and feedback system that you develop now, will later be distributed to and completed by your cooperating supervisor and other professionals whom you came into contact with during the practicum (see 9.03).
  8. Submit a completed draft of your plan to PSU's ITSC Practicum Supervisor for approval and approximately three weeks prior to the proposed starting date for your actual field experience. Your plan will be reviewed and feedback provided. ALL feedback must be addressed and your revised plan must be resubmitted for review. Incomplete or under developed plans will be returned for revisions.

Note: Only when your plan is approved by PSU's ITSC Practicum Supervisor and after proof of liability insurance and Act 34 & 151 clearances is provided, will you be granted permission to begin the actual field experience.
