1.15 FTP. Transfer text and binary files to and from Internet servers using "FTP" (file transfer protocol) software, specifically a secure client.

Introduction

File transfer protocol (FTP) is an efficient way in which to move files between servers and computers. You can download and install large software applications, text files, or image files using "FTP." While a Web browser is one way to give people access to the information contained in many of these file types, it is not always the most efficient way to move actual files from one computer to another. To put a Web site on the World Wide Web you must "FTP" your HTML files, image files, sound files, and video files to the server hosting your Web site. As you can see, to really take advantage of the Internet, you must be able to use the file transfer protocol.

Your Job:

  2. Use the stepwise process listed under Your Portfolio to display the completed product in your ITSC portfolio.

    Product Details:

    • You will demonstrate mastery of this competency by successfully transferring your completed web-based portfolio from your computer to our IDE server.
    • Contact the ITSC Program Director to request that an FTP folder be created for you. (Your ftp folder will also serve as the web site for your ITSC portfolio.)
