Learning Resources - Media 1.08

1.08 Digital Video. Create a digital video.

Introduction

Digital video is a very dynamic medium. Using video in your presentations to the community, you can bring people into the classroom and have them see first hand how technology is being used as a powerful educational tool. Digitizing video involves recording a video source on your computer and saving it as digital information. Many newer computers are multimedia ready. These computers are often packaged with speakers, a microphone, a CD-ROM player, audio/video inputs and outputs, and recording software. A multimedia computer, if set up properly, will digitize a video image. At a minimum, your computer must have a video card, video input jack to receive the cables from your video source (VCR or camcorder), and a video editing software application such as iMovie or Videostudio. Even when you think you have all the right hardware, the amount of video you can digitize will be limited. This is due to the substantial storage needs of digitized video. One second of uncompressed video requires more than 27 megabytes of free hard drive space. Therefore, managing your storage needs is one of the most important parts of successful video digitizing. The type of computer and video software you are using will determine the process you will use for digitizing video. As a result, use the video recording software manual, as well as the computer manual when completing this competency.
