Did you know...
that the systems approach is an attempt to break away from the industrial model of education and develop a view of education more consistent with society's present and future needs? that systems thinking can be used to build a model of an educational system? Greater expectations for the results of our educational system have prompted reflection on methods to improve education. Previous methods of identifying isolated causal events led to piecemeal, inadequate results. A different perspective is required that will examine the whole system that we call education, as well as its component parts and the way those parts interact with one another. Looking at the whole and its parts--and their interactions--in an effort to identify problems and recommend solutions is the goal of systems thinking.
Once we begin to understand the basic ideas that support the systems approach, how can it be applied to education to help bring about positive change and improvement? The steps that follow outline one way to approach applying a systemic view to problem definition and solution recommendation in education.
